When
the owner of this 1962 Cadillac Series 62 convertible brought it
to David B. for service, he was only the second mechanic she trusted
to maintain her favorite car. She had purchased it new in San
Francisco and had promised her husband before he died that she would
never sell it. She kept that promise and named her Caddy “Baby.” For
30 years it had gone to only one mechanic to keep it in good running
order. When he retired, she gave David’s shop a try.
He
took care of Baby as though it were his own, making sure its 390
CID, 300 hp engine purred smoothly. When she passed away in
2000, the owner willed the car to David, knowing he would cherish
Baby as she had. And he does. When he repainted Baby,
he kept the original white as the color. Although it has a
replacement engine, David has the original safely stored away. The
whole car has been kept “original.” David keeps
his trips short, with a recent one with fellow Roamin Angels to Carmel
being the longest one. Mainly he cruises around town or takes
Baby to parades or charity fund-raisers. He’s taking
care of his Baby.
