1949 Mercury convertibleGoing Topless

“When the top goes down, the price goes up” is a saying among classic car auctioneers. John Klein shared that appreciation for ragtops (convertibles), but his ‘49 Mercury 4dr sedan was not one. So John changed that. Grabbing a Sawzall, he cut off the top. Of course, there was no convertible soft top in case of rain, but John didn’t care. He had his James Dean-type cruiser. Adding chrome lake pipes along the sides that sported rear fender skirts, shaving the chrome on the hood, trunk and sides (including door handles), chopping the windshield and lowering the body on the frame were the next steps. Then he added dual spotlights (dummies, for looks only) on the windshield pillars and painted it base-coat black with wild yellow flames on the hood and fenders. He capped it all off with nostalgic wide whitewall tires and Hollywood Flipper hubcaps. To make it dependable, John dropped in a late-model 5.0 liter fuel-injected Ford engine and an auto transmission. Safety comes from the modern disc brakes and Lincoln steering. Now John cruises comfortably in 50's style. And if the weather turns wet, he can pop up his umbrella and sing in the rain.
