I
ran across this really old newspaper article while Christina
and I were cleaning out one of our storage rooms. We almost
threw it out because it was in a paper bag with a lot of old
cards and things. The date is not shown anywhere on the scrap,
but it is in the early '60's.
In
the early 1960's, there was a used car lot on East Main Street,
approximately where the lube and car wash is now. The owner
was Ed Irons. He ran a promotion that awarded a trip to Hawaii
to some "lucky" buyer of one of his fine used cars.
Well, I had recently purchased a 1954 Oldsmobile from him and
what do you know, I was the "winner". The truth is
that the prize was airfare only, and it left in the middle
of the night, in the middle of the week. Ed could not find
anyone who could afford this wonderful prize. So he chose me,
and I offered it to my dad. (seems fair, he paid for the car)
My mom was not too happy about it since it was only one ticket and she would
be staying home. However it worked out well for my dad. He connected with an
old navy buddy that he had served with in the war who now lived there. He rented
a car and spent a week driving all over the big island. I was glad I could give
him something for all the times he bought me a car and helped me keep it running.
This was certainly not the first car he bought for me.
The other thing that is of interest is the price of Ed Iron's fine cars. A 1956
Chevy for $495.00, or a 1958 Olds for $198.00 !! Ah, if only we could go back.
