With the month of September comes our club's spectacular car show and normally I would be writing a 'rah-rah' column on the show. This time it is different. I write these words on Friday, August 28th, right after coming home from the Friday breakfast at IHOP. This morning, Ray announced that he felt compelled to end his twenty-year service to the club as the emcee at the club's breakfasts. I am dedicating this column to telling you about what Ray has contributed to the club in that capacity.
When I joined, back in late 2000, there were only about thirty or forty ever at breakfast. I had lived in the area less than a year and a member by the name of Elmo (no, not the Muppet) invited me when he heard I was into cars. Ray was president then and, just as he did today, went around welcoming everyone. I well remember him shaking my hand, telling me it was great that I was there. He introduced me as a guest and had me tell about the cars I drove. Just as he has done for every guest at every breakfast that he has emceed. Ray has always been consistently warm and welcoming to everyone. I am sure that there have been times he would just as soon have passed some people by, but he never did. No matter how anyone treated him, Ray was always the gentleman and offered his hand of welcome. That is just the way Ray is. When I saw how little press the club got for what we did, I spoke to Ray about doing some publicity. He not only agreed, but encouraged me, even having me stand up in front of the group to read anything I got in the paper. That was a definite factor in my decision to run for the board.
In 2005, I became president. Ray asked if he could still be the 'Kmart greeter' at the breakfasts. I told him I not only wanted him to do that, but also to continue as emcee. Doing that well is a gift and Ray is one of the most gifted people in that area I have ever met. Why would I want to do an inferior job of it with Ray around? Fortunately, he agreed. He continued to greet everyone, find out who needed to speak that morning and would introduce and welcome guests with a incredible regularity.
This morning he said that in the twenty years of enceeing the breakfast, first as president and then as a regular member, he has only missed about fifteen breakfasts. That is dedication in the extreme. I know I have missed at least that many in the less-than five years I have been president. Now that Ray will no longer emcee, I will probably be doing it. After a few weeks you will probably be screaming to bring Ray back. I am not a natural emcee and it is not a job I wanted. So be kind. My ego bruises easily.
In closing, I want to say that Ray's emceeing reminds me of the theme song from a James Bond film, "The Spy Who Loved Me." Ray, nobody does it better.
'Nuff said, I'm outta here.

Board Member Reports
Edie H. reported that several members had visits to the hospital the past month. Emilie R. is having her ankle replaced this week (OUCH!).
Ron N. indicated he had sent out 3 thank yous – to Reno Swap Meet, Butch Gardner and John Sweeny. There were 201 raffle tickets sold at HAN and 54 at the Arco swap meet. To date we have sold 1685, (last year to date we'd only sold 1501). There will only be 3000 tickets sold for this raffle. He also updated the members on the Corvair. He said no money has been given to the school. We have allocated $2,000 for repairs, but at this time we've only paid for a tune up kit and to chrome the bumpers. Bruce B. is chairing the committee to get the project up and running.
Steve D. asked if there was a large Roamin Angel banner that he would be willing to put up near the self-storage area, and it was determined that we did not have one. Mike H. and he will get together and design one. Thane A. and Duke K. were in attendance at the meeting and agreed this would be a good idea and car show will cover the cost of it.
Terry E. said that everything is ready to go at for the car show. Riebe's special tool chest raffle tickets are printed,--2500 will be sold only on Saturday and Sunday during the car show. Karin R. indicated there are 518 total registrations (81 Roamin Angels), but she hadn't gone through those received in the mail today. Last year we were at 619. Korbel was very happy with the turnout, and invited us back next year. He indicated that the Mystery Tour is going well, if you haven't paid the balance-it's due now. The Mexican Riviera cruise is sold out with 23 cabins.
Vic R. went to Pleasanton with Bob Stearns gave a seminar about challenges we are going to face in the upcoming year. One attendee, a retired police chief from Folsom, is willing to help us. The remote sensing issue is going to really heat up this next year.
