The Roamin Angels Engine Raffle Things are slowly…but surely….falling into place for this year’s “Survive the Drive II” April 28th here in Grass Valley.

At the beginning of the year I told you I was working with GVFD Chief Buttron on securing the local safety training facility. It’s a big cement pad about 200ft wide by 700ft long near Sierra College. It also has classrooms for training. All was just about ready for signing on the dotted line when…. the management of the Pad was transitioned from the Fire district to Sierra College.

Back to square one….but …It’s funny how things turn out.

The Sierra College Facilities Manager and I work with the CTE programs at the High School district. The college now has the documents it needs and we’ll be at that dotted line position again shortly. Donna is 100% behind making this happen and her Daughter will be one of the first student drivers to sign up.

We obviously don’t have a track to drive on so the course content needed to be tweaked a little. Up Steps GVFD and GVPD! GVPD will have students and parents driving carts with various impairment goggles and GVFD will demo the Jaws of life. The College also got into it by bringing in 20 plus wrecked cars to make a point for the event (and for training purposes).

Big “A” will be running a series of ads starting this month and is providing certificates so the participating families can eat afterwards. You know…burgers and B.S. “I only knocked over 3 cones!

Triple A insurance will supply a prize or two along with volunteers. Riebes is all in and ready to support the project. The High School district and principals are all in. Local Kiwanis and Rotarians are helping out again. KNCO will host the CHP, GVPD, and myself in an interview next Month. The Union will help with publicity and “Teen Impact Drivers” is ready to roll with classroom instruction.

It’s Spring and we have the usual conflicts but if you can help the day of the event and join the dozen members who have already volunteered, it would be much appreciated. We need another 10 or so of you to step up. Help check the families in, direct traffic, play security, man one of the training pit stops, help teach a kid what to look for so he or she is driving a safe car. It’s fun, it’s rewarding and I’ll get you a $10 off coupon to eat at Big “A” when we’re done.

Got a neighbor or Grandkid who should be at “Survive the Drive II”? Information and applications are presently on line at You can contact Pat G also.

Call or e mail me to sign up as a volunteer.
