President's message
President RonAs we say good-bye to what is apparently the last of the rainy season, summer seems to be hitting with a vengeance (at least thatÕs the prediction as I write this). What happened to a mild spring? Oh, well, at least it means itÕs good weather for rods and classics. And our calendar is chock full of things to do. There are car shows, cruises, patio dining, et cet-era, et cet-era, et cet-era. (Name the show that line is from. Hint: Yul Brenner.)

On a little more serious line, I have been asked questions by members about when the club is buying property and what type of property we are buying. Let me make this perfectly clear: the property committee is checking on the feasibility of purchasing something and, if feasible, will make recommendations. However, even if the committee feels it is feasible and a good move, NO PROPERTY WILL BE PURCHASED OR MONEY SET ASIDE TO MAKE A PURCHASE UNLESS THE MEMBERS WANT TO. I cannot stress that too much. After the car show, we will put all the information together in reports and see if the members want to pursue this any further by way of a survey of ALL members. No action will be taken on this by the board or the committee. The board has already voted for this course of action. It is not that the board is afraid to decide, but this is of such import and could change the nature of the club so greatly that this is not something to be taken lightly and entered into rashly. There are strong views on both sides and you will be given the information to make an intelligent decision. I have friends in the club who disagree with my viewpoint and I respect their views. I hope that all of you will feel the same way and not make this a divisive issue. I am not going to present any position here, merely to assure all of you that a decision has not been made and when it is made, you will make the overall decision. So read the updates and ask any questions you wish. There is not going to be any 'backdoor' action on this.

Well, that got way too serious. I am just about to leave on vacation, so I'm going to make this a shorty. I still have a few things to do and I leave in just a few hours, so I will say, quite literally,

'Nuff said, I'm outta here.

Board Highlights
Minutes from the General Meeting
May 18, 2009 • 6pm • Salvation Army, Grass Valley

All board members, except Ron C., were present as were 46 members/spouses.

There was a very brief open forum, then VP, Terry E. called the meeting to order at 6:07 p.m.

Tonight's agenda was approved with two additions. Minutes from the last meeting were approved (Edie H. / George M.) as was the treasurer's report. (Ron N./ Edie H.)

Committee Reports:
The Building Committee: Larry E. reassured the members that this is purely a fact-finding committee at this time. In 2001, another committee looked into the possibility of purchasing a piece of property, but nothing came of it. Today, the members have formed another ad-hoc committee to look at the options available once again. The board has neither approved or disapproved the formation of this committee, but did approve a small amount of money to be spent to cover the legal expenses to investigate the club's options. The board asked that a board member be present at the meetings. Vice president, Terry E. attended the last meeting, and gave the committee a list of questions the he felt needed to be investigated. This prompted the committee to meet with legal council, Steven Haas, a local tax attorney. He described how we could best be served in this endeavor - probably forming a separate LLC that would not jeopardize our non-profit status in any way. We cannot put the club in jeopardy financially.

Ted C. asked that the members consider the need to establish something concrete to pass on to a new generation of Roamin Angels members. We need to have a base, somewhere where we can hold events, parties, and where the members can 'hang out' and work on their cars.

The building committee plans to put together a report for the Board which will then be forwarded to the membership. Then, if it is the membership's decision to proceed and go forward, a building fund could be established.

Some members voiced concerns about maintenance and cleanup of the building and how votes to do this would be cast and counted. Terry E. indicated these are just a few of the many details that would have to be worked out prior to ANY member vote or club commitment to proceed.
Tom T. encouraged all members who have questions, concerns, or ideas for the building committee to come to them and let them be heard. The building committee members are Tom T., Larry E., Dennis G., Dennis R., Dusty S., Bill B., Bob G., and the board representative, Terry E.

B. Car Show - Thane indicated he has met with the folks over in Nevada City to determine the best way to handle their closing of Broad Street on Saturday afternoon of the Car show.

C. Club Radios - Dave G. just returned form a plastic car convention in Las Vegas. On the way, he purchased a couple of hand-held Cobra CBÕs. They operate on their own frequency, which aren't compatible with our radios. Their range was about 7 miles (open, flat roads). They will do another test with that product around here, and additional testing of similar products. A lot of Roamin Angels own the Motorola-type, and about 50% of those have troubles with the product.

D. Events- The regular calendar still stands, but LOP-Northridge (first Monday/each month) has been cancelled. Also, the Hwy. 40 event has been cancelled. If you have an event idea, contact Dave B.

Tom T. announced the LOP Fourth of July event WILL take place. He has no details at this time, but will advise Dave B. as soon as he knows.

E. Legislative Action - Bob Stearns went to Redding this past weekend, and was able to secure someone as a representative for the north State. Vic R. took 4 Roamin Angels with him to Sacramento and they gathered a lot of information on the upcoming legislation. There are over 3,300 car clubs in California, and it is estimated that we donate about $36,000,000 to charities annually. We need to gather these clubs together, and voice our concerns at the legislators that are chipping away at our hobby. Vic R. also announced that we spend about $100,000,000 on our cars just to keep them up. Add travel to car shows, restaurants and other spending, that would be a great dent in local economies should our hobby disappear.

F. Membership Committee - Edie H. is forming a committee to help her meet and greet the new members of the club. So far, Diane B., Sylvia C., and Gary A. have agreed to help out. If you're interested in joining the fun, give Edie H. a call. She also reported that Don M. had cut his arm with a chain saw (OUCH), but is doing OK.

G. Scholarship Committee - The team have selected three outstanding high school students for this years awards. They are Rebecca Dunham and Henry Enring from Nevada Union, and Kyle Young from Bear River and who is also the Roamin Angels family award winner for 2009. They will be at the Friday breakfast on May 29 to meet club members.

H. Toy Drive Committee - Mike H. announced he has Lymon Gilmore School Band committed to participate in the toy drive parade on Dec. 4. The school was unwilling to commit to the Friday following Thanksgiving.

Old Business
Court Case - Tate has another appearance in court on May 23. We do not need to attend this. We will report on the progress after that date.

Logo - We are applying for a trademark.

Crate Engine - Larry E. has found a 330-HO engine that is for sale for less than $3,000 and is asking that Scholarship purchase it for the car show next year. It could be the last of the 330's we are able to get. In a special meeting held directly after this general meeting it was unanimously agreed that the engine be purchased.

Proposed Event - Steve O. has a terraced area in their backyard, and would like to hold a 'Movie Night' there sometime this summer. Everyone was very enthusiastic about this idea. He has space for about 100 lawn chairs. Parking could be a problem, but we can 'double-date'.He will schedule the event through Dave B.

Photos on Roster? Members indicated on the survey that they would like to have photos in the printed roster, however, the logistics of doing this is very difficult. Bev G. suggested putting the new members photos in the newsletter when they join so we know who they are. We will work on this.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:22 p.m.
