Tahoe Day Cruise
Story by Steve O. • Photos by Steve O. & Bud Heller
Landon & Karen S. once again put on a wonderfully planned event that all enjoyed. On June 11th, 24 cars left Kmart at 8:00 AM and headed up 20 & 80 joining old Highway 40 at the Cisco Grove exit. We did have numerous road construction delays, even on 40, but that didn't dampen the spirits of the intrepid Angels on the quest for higher places.
After a pit stop along the way the next stop found us hanging over Fanny Bridge which just about stopped traffic along the bridge. Some of us also toured the small Tahoe Museum beside the bridge.
Lunch took us south down the road a few miles to the Sunnyside Resort where we had our own room with a whole wall of windows overlooking beautiful Lake Tahoe. By then we realized we had lost a couple of vehicles along the way with Tail-end-Ray H & Steve D missing in action. While we are all enjoying our good fortune of being at the right place at the right time, in comes a red faced Ray. Turns out the coil on the truck failed and Steve had stopped to help shuttle Ray to get replacement parts. Of course once Ray was on the road again he beat Steve to lunch. We had a great lunch and you should have seen the size of some of the desserts they trucked out from the kitchen.
Leaving our lunch stop we headed toward Carnelian Bay for a tour of the Sierra Boat Works. Our guide met us in the front display room and gave us a briefing on the facility and then we headed upstairs to look at various boats and wander along the stacks of boats in storage. Then it was back downstairs to see a Million Dollar Racer from the 20's and on to the restoration facilities. We thanked our tour guide and headed on to our next destination at Incline Village.
We had an appointment to go back to school at Sierra Nevada College, Tahoe Center for Environmental Science. This is a joint venture between Sierra College & U.C. Davis. There we had our choice of a presentation on the ecology of the Lake, including a 3D tour into the lake, or a tour of Building Green. The Environment Building is one of only a few in the world to recieve the highest honor for envionmental building construction.
With the tours over we got back to our cars for the caravan home, with a few dropping out for refreshments along the way. Some just don't think ahead enough to pack their own.
