I learned a lot about driving on my recent trip to Italy. Although I drove some in Italy, I learned never to drive in Rome. The thing is that Roman traffic rules are different than here. Here are a few examples: Never signal unless you are about to cut someone off and then as you are doing so. Never get into the exit lane on the freeway until the last possible second and do so from the fast lane. Traffic lanes are suggestions that need not be followed, including double lines. Use two cell phones and make notes on a pad while weaving wildly through traffic. Vespas don't follow any rules. I learned these while riding with our taxi driver, Fabio. I hired him for the trips from and back to the airport. I figured that anyone who can drive like that and survive must be good.
Now that I am back in the USA, I am again amazed at how much there is to do in this club. Truly no one can do all, or even most of that is available. So choose wisely. And while your choosing, consider helping with selling tickets for the scholarship engine. This program helps kids who are as interested in cars as we were when we were their age. Only now you can't fix a car by the setting points with a matchbook cover or set the air-fuel mixture with a screwdriver and a good ear. Well, you can if it's one of our rods and classics, but how many of those are on the road? You need training to work in the automotive world now and that ain't cheap. We have also helped the auto program at NU (the only one left in the area) by buying much needed equipment. The ROP program is the first to suffer cut-backs when money is tight and this year is definitely one of those. Our scholarship program is something that every member can be proud of. So come out, sell a few tickets, and get really proud. Ron N. has a list of all the places we will be selling them this summer. Talk to him and find out when and where will work into your schedule.
We are rounding the corner onto the last lap of our 'really big shew.' (Name the late TV show host that made that famous. Too easy. Name his original career. Hint: think John L.) There are still many areas that need help. Contact Thane or Duke to find out who needs a little help from their friends. It is a fun way to put in your time helping the club.
Lastly, I still need cars for the Roamin Angel Corner in The Union. If you have a car that has not been in, contact me by phone, by FAX, by email or even in person (rare in this age). Sorry, I do not text or tweet. This helps the club by keeping our name out there in a positive way without paying for it. I can take the pics at breakfast or some other Roamin Angels event, or I can drive to your place. Have Camera- Will Travel. Who was the famous cousin of the star of that early TV show, the one with a gun instead of a camera. Too easy again. Next time I'll try to make them harder.
'Nuff said, I'm outta here.

Minutes from the General Meeting
June 29, 2009 • 6pm • Salvation Army, Grass Valley
All board members except David B. and Edie H. were present, as were 24 members/spouses. President Ron C. called the meeting to order at 6:15 p.m. There was no correspondence to review. Minutes from the last general meeting were accepted as written. Motion: (Sheila A./Landon S.)
Tonight's agenda was accepted with two additions. Motion: (Lynne F./Landon S.)
Sheila A. gave a brief treasurerÕs report. Motion to approve: (Ron N./Landon S.)
Other Board Member Reports
Ron N. reported that the newly completed engine trailer can fly!!! He had quite a time with it on Interstate 80 on the way to Pinole, and it did come off the ball, with damage to the gas tank on the trailer. It will have to be replaced. But, once there they sold a total of 73 tickets. He also reported that about 50 tickets were sold last weekend at the Harbor Freight show.
Steve O. reported that the movie night is set for July 11 at his home. They have a terraced area in their back yard- be sure to bring lawn chairs if you plan to attend. They have room to park about 25 cars, so double-date if you can. Sue O. will shuttle folks down to the area from the parking spaces.
Kathy E. said that July 9 patio dining will be at Tofanelli's. Park your car at the designated spot on Main Street, and we'll walk to dinner. She also indicated there are still 10 rooms available for the Mexican cruise that will be in Sept. 2010–not this year. The Mystery Tour is sold out. The Korbel Trip in August is going strong. Margie M. has the rooms all filled.
Vic R. went to the supervisor's meeting and gave them invitations to the car show+ dinner. They have not RSVPed yet. He did not make it to Sacramento with Stearns.
Old Business
1. Court Case – Won't need members to attend on July 10. We aren't sure what the status is right now.
2. Property Committee – Larry E. indicated there was some miscommunication with the board representative and the property committee. They are working to clarify these issues. Oct. 9 they plan a get together – not a dinner – at the Higgins Lyons Club building to see what can be done with a facility. Members will be able to ask questions at that time.
3. Club Radios – Dave G. indicated he still hasn't gotten the new radios to test.
4. Toy Drive – The toy drive will be back at Sutton and Brunswick this year. An insurance policy will cost the club $150. The Marines and the Salvation Army will probably partner with us to do distribution this year. Sharon A. and Lynne F. went to the VA building in GV to look at their building. It was suggested that they contact John Sweeny and Drive Magazine and ask other car clubs to help us.
5. Logo- Registration is still in process. The application was returned to us for further information.
6. Car Show – RiebeÕs will likely be a major sponsor of the car show. The have met with the car show heads and Ron C. and are putting together a program that may include a NASCAR car/driver, and a major raffle item that will be donated to our Scholarship fund.
New Business
1. Karen S. outlined a new membership we will have on Smug-Mug. It is an online photo-storage area that members will be able to access, add photos to the albums, and purchase prints, mugs, mousepads, and other photo items.
2. The board was asked to provide a listing of members that provide automotive services, and agreed that this would be a good idea. After presenting it to the members at tonight's meeting, members expressed some interest, but more concerns. At this time the item will be put on the next board agenda for discussion.
There being no further business to conduct, the meeting was adjourned at 7:03 p.m.
