This will be the last time I write this column. No, I am not leaving the club or the board, but I will not be running for president next term. In spite of an offer of a 1000% increase in my salary (1000 X 0 = 0, for you non-mathematically inclined), it is time to let a new face be in front (and writer fill this space). When I took the office of president almost six years ago I know many thought, "He's never going to be Ray Yedding." They were right. As Sammy Davis, Jr. sang, "I've gotta be me." Same will be true for the next sucker . . . I mean honored recipient of the office. The club got behind me and supported me as I took over for a legend in this club. I trust the next president will receive the same support. I have learned over the years that I am not irreplaceable and that here is always someone who can do the job I do as well, if not better, than I.
Since I have your attention, I will take advantage of this "swan song" to hit a few important points. Trivia: legend has it that a swan never sings until right before it dies. Hmmm.
First, I want to say thanks to Dave G. for his six years of service on the board. He was sergeant-at-arms, which means he did a lot of lifting and toting of club equipment. Not a lot of glamor there, but a very needed job. And Dave did it well. Fortunately, Dave is a big, strong guy, but that does not lessen the value of his service to the club. Next time you see him, say, "Thanks." He just might have saved your back. I know I will miss having him on the board. Thanks, Dave.
As many now know, Thane and Duke have stepped forward to head next year's car show. Having these pros at the helm pretty much insures another success. Most chairs are also filled, so it looks like "full steam ahead." That does not mean everything is handled. There is still tons of work to do and everyone is needed. Find an area to plug in and do your part to make this show another resounding success.
I have been collating the surveys. I am glad to say that the vast majority of responders like what we do: the car show, the toy drive and helping the Salvation Army during the holidays. These things have come to define this club over the years and it is good to know the members still support them. I know I am proud when I walk into some local business wearing my club jacket and people come up to me and say, "A Roamin Angel, huh? You guys are cool." And they are not just talking about our cars. My favorite saying is that we are a car club, but a car club with a heart.I could ramble on for several more pages, but I've said enough over the last few years. It has been an honor to represent this club as president. And so, for the last time, I'll say . . .
'Nuff said, I'm outta here.
