Although March 27th wasn't the first day of Spring, it could have been. Great weather and the need for the Roamin Angels to get out and roam was evident. Eventually 55 cars showed up to park on the lawn not far from the main gate to the grandstand at the All American Speedway in Roseville. We spent a couple of hours visiting and getting up to date on what everyone has been doing during the cold weather months and then it was time for our feast. The lunch/dinner food, provided by Reibes and bbq'd by Jay Cooper, was piled high with a green salad, potato salad and a tri-tip sandwich along with a pile of tri-tip on the side, for good measure. We saw no one leaving the eating area hungry, most couldn't finish what was on their plates. Of course, being Roamin Angels, we saw several lining up at the food stands a couple of hours later saying they were hungry again.
Throughout the afternoon the time for our parading around the track in our cars changed from 7PM to 7:30 and finally 8:00. Many of us watched the Legends of the Pacific race around in their mini race cars and then another racing class. Thirteen laps into that race, during one of the many yellow flags, the announcer asked the "drivers of the Classic Cars to report to your cars". A large portion of us got up from the stands in mass and proceeded to our cars. Since the current race was only 13 laps into a 125 laps race it seemed a little premature, but we followed directions, for a change. Eventually we began what was to be a very slow treck around the outside parimeter of the race area.
We traveled a few feet, stopped, shut down the engine and waited, only to start up and move a few more feet and repeat the process. From the noise on the track it was obvious the race was still ongoing, but with many yellow flags. Finally things got quiet and it was evident the race was finally over and it was out big shot at a tour around the track. We entered the 1/3 mile track at turn 3 and proceeded along the grandstand area passing turn 4 and then turn one. At turn 2 we exited the track to return to our parking area. The highlight of my night was whenI heard the announcer say something to the effect, "and is that a Studebaker!" We were on the track for less than one full lap but according to Rosanne, who remained in the stands to watch our cars, the announcer gave the crowd a great rundown on the Roamin Angles and our contributions to the community and what a great bunch of guys and gals we are! On the way back to our parking area we passed one of our cars that was a "did not finish". No names mentioned, but was that a 56 Nomad that overheated on the race track?
I think many RA's decided to continue home as we returned to our parking area. The rest of us returned to the stands to watch a wedding, introductions, some fireworks and finally the main event, the NASCAR K&N Pro Series Race. It was a great race with only 3 or 4 yellow flags and two cars battling it out for first place, most of the race. With only two laps left after the last yellow flag it was a mad dash to the finish with the NAPA car winning the 150 lap highlight of the night. Everyone we talked to had a great time and we all proceeded to our cars to head home. Of course Bill R. was heard talking about heading to Mel's Diner. Who knows what he did on the way home.
We found ourselves driving down our driveway a little after 11pm after having had a great day socializing, eating, and watching a great event and even going almost a hole lap around the race track.
