AB 1740 Committe Hearing

AB 1740 is a bill which would delete the current 500 ‘kit-car’ limit on the number of specialty constructed vehicles that can be registered in the state of California on an annual basis. Our bill would delete this limit, and instead require the Department of Motor Vehicles to register any car that meets specified criteria. This issue is a particular interest of mine, having grown up around custom cars as the son of Dean Jeffries and being an automotive enthusiast to this day.

Sacramento, 3/22/10

Bill K. and Vic R. met Bob Sterns in Auburn and drove to the Capitol for a 1:30pm meeting/hearing on AB1740 (Jeffries) Special Constructed Vehicles.

In attendance were a couple of guys from the GoodGuys, 2 from Brizio affiliates the chair was Ms. Lowenthal, who would only let 2 people from each side talk for 2 minutes. Bob Sterns and a guy from the GoodGuys spoke while the rest of us were allowed to state our names and say that we support the bill. The opposition spoke - The Lung Association and Air Resource es Board. It would of been nice if they could have told the truth instead of relying on their computer generated numbers!

Jeffries has the last say and scolded them for their statistics. Then the vote was taken (Us (6) to Them (3). They needed 8 votes. Jeffries hat top run to another committee meeting so we went to Senator (didn't get the name)'s office and talked with him. He voted with us. this was good but not quite enough. The good news ils that the bill didn't die and many more have to be amended. 7 yeses to 3 noes votes.

Before leaving, we stopped by Dan Logue's Sacramento office. He was at a hearing but had a good chat with his staff and left our cards.
