The Department of Motor Vehicles offers special interest license plates to Californians looking to make charitable donations, show support for certain groups and just stand out from the crowd. The special interest plates are available in a standard numbering format or personalized configuration, where customers can choose their plate setup. Most can be ordered online on the DMV Web site at https://vrir.dmv.ca.gov/ipp/ippMain.jsp or by submitting a complete special interest license plate application by mail. Plates can be placed on autos, commercial vehicles, trailers and motorcycles.

There are a variety of plates to choose from. To support environmental programs, the environmental plate is available as a standard personalized plate. For those with family members affected by the September 11, 2001 terror attacks or for anyone who would like to help fight terrorism, the Memorial plate is a nice, commemorative option. There are also veteran and firefighter specific plates, and special recognition plates for Congressional Medal of Honor and Purple Heart recipients.
