RON, THE PRESIDENT
If you are reading this on the first Wednesday or Friday, I am somewhere in the gut of SoCal. These tours seem to bring me back from whence I fled to Nevada County, but they're worth it. Good people and good fun. However, in the final countdown I always seem to be in a panic. One year I found a big puddle of 90 wt oil under the '72 Vette, making it no longer a viable option, and had to scramble to do a minimal vehicular check-out on the '63 Vette so I could take it. Fortunately, it survived Idaho. Last trip, my back was out so badly I had to take a civilian car. (I think Dick allowed it only because so many cancelled that year.) This year weather and installation problems for Duke made getting the new Tremac 5-sp installed in the '72 a close call. I've had to handle other problems in this last week, like wipers (fixed, thank God) and sound system (not working right at this time). So I'm taking a break to write this. Rambling, I know, but it mirrors my life right now. Speaking of mirrors, at least I did get the right-hand side view mirror on.
Okay, enough about my issues, let's talk about the club's. What is happening? Well, we have a record number of applicants for our scholarship program. It makes it harder to choose, but ensures quality recipients. The finishing touches are being done on the raffle engine and trailer. That brings me to the next item: the Lukas Tate hearing. It is on the morning of April 23rd. I have been subpoenaed to appear at 8:30 am as a witness for the prosecution. Some of us have put long hours and a lot of effort in getting this case this far. Here is where YOU can help. The ADA said that a show of support by the club could help. Everyone who can make it should do so, wearing Roamin Angel colors. We want the court system to know this is not going to be forgotten. Be there if you care.
Lastly, the property committee, which is investigating the feasability of the club acquiring a building, has started meeting. This will be a long process and go before the entire membership before we commit to anything, but they will have their own report on this. What I wanted to cover is that they felt there needs to be more 'gearhead' activities. Instead of complaining about the lack, they are organizing them. That is what this club is about: members doing something that they think needs to be done. The board is a facilitator, not your mother. It makes sure events are in order and do not conflict with each other, but the members are the ones who decide what they want to do. I congratulate the property committee on their initiative and encourage more to follow their example. I hope to hear more Angels doing the same. Come up with an activity that you think members would like and check with the events chair, David B., to see that it is a good date. Then go for it.
'Nuff said, I'm outta here.
General Meeting Minutes
March 23, 2009 • Salvation Army, Alta Street,
Grass Valley
All board members were present as were 28 members and their spouses.
The meeting was called to order at 6:10 p.m. following the members' open forum.
Minutes from the last general meeting, tonight's agenda-approved. (Edie H./Landon S.)
Sheila A. gave a brief treasurer's report. Motion to approve-passed. (Edie H./Tom T.)
Other board member reports:
Edie reported that she had tried to make contact with the 3 new members, but has not been successful at this time. There are 169 members in the club at this time.
Ron N. reported he will have a new storage unit soon for the engine. Everything is ready to go for the Downtown Grass Valley car show on April 25.
Dave B. indicated that the LOP cruise night will be held on April 13th, not the 6th.
Terry E. announced that he will be putting together 2 committees - one to determine the feasibility of establishing a youth group for the Roamin Angels. (Sheila A. indicated this should be for members under the age of 55). He needs volunteers to research how this has worked in other car clubs. After the car show, a committee to review the requests and suggestions for donations. The committee will consider the requests, and bring their suggestions to the board. He will also be sitting in on any other standing committees that are not covered by another board member.
Vic R. reported that there is a new Senate bill (SB 385) that will expand smog exemptions up to 1975. He just received notice of this bill, and hasn't had time to send it off to Bob Stearns of the ACCC. He will do that and report back.
Ron C. indicated he has received a letter from the Secretary of State indicating that 90% of all Big Raffle proceeds must be donated to charity.
OLD BUSINESS
1.) Court Case - Ron C. has received a summons to appear for the prosecution in the engine theft issue. April 23 - 9 am. -Be there with your colors!!!
2.) Breakfast report - Everything is going pretty well. We are averaging between 75-80 participants. Ron wants to remind everyone to remember to pay your bill- very easy to forget to do this with so much going on.
3.) Budget - Sheila A. has prepared a budget of expenditures for 2010. Any interested member may contact her directly to see this.
NEW BUSINESS
1.) Ad hoc committee reports: Club Radio - Still investigating
Property - The committee has requested that $15,000 a year (for 3 years) be set aside for the possible purchase of a club house property. The board has given conditional 'yes' for this, but it will depend on car show proceeds, and the letter received from the Sec of State (see above), and other legal issues as to our corporate status. This will also depend on membership interest and approval. It will be put on the survey next year. Ron C. would like the committee to check with the Lyons Club in LOP and see how they're running their building program.
2.) PA System - The new PA system has arrived, and Ron C. is very happy with it. He indicated it will work for the gravity drags and other 'small' outside events we have.
3.) Car Show Computer- The board has approved the purchase of a laptop for the car show. This will be the computer given to the chair person for each year's car show.
4.) Wall Decor- The Roamin Angel memorabilia that was at the breakfast club is now in the trunk of Ron C.'s Impala. This is stuff that belongs to the members, so we plan to raffle off 5 or 6 of these things at the general meetings in the upcoming months. This does NOT include the plaques, and trophies, but the other 'general stuff'.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 6:45 p.m.
